THE FACE OF CHRIST

Drawn by Greg Zoltowski with Palm Ashes

The Face of Christ

Before the Lenten season of 2003 I suggested to our liturgical committee that for Ash Wednesday I create an image of the suffering Christ out of palm ashes and we sign the congregation from the image. The symbolism behind this project would be Christ giving himself and walking with us through Lent. Each of the images you see is a PhotoShop interpretation of the original 18”X24” original which is unique to the parish community we visited and there are 10 in all. Each celebrant swiped the ashes differently, thereby creating a distinct final image. Seen together the drawings are a suite revealing a different breath of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. Image #2 appeared in the Spring 2005 issue of Church magazine accompanied by an article, “The Word Shaped by Human Hands.” These images as well as PhotoShop interpretations are available for exhibition, and accompanied by a lecture and a book of meditations.
